Classic Mediterranean Lady image
The first century AD in the Roman Empire was a time of relative peace and one of great prosperity. Artistic freedom was honored and encouraged. The Italian lamp styles of the time had unique volutes (crescents) bracketing the splayed nozzles which attached gracefully into the wheel-thrown body. The motifs that adorned these lamps depicted every conceivable scene of daily life.

The goddess Roma was a particularly important goddess from the 1st through the 3rd century AD. Previous generations viewed her as a minor warrior goddess among the warring gods. Her renewed veneration as keeper of peace, harmony, and abundance is noteworthy during the European rule by the Romans.
